This is a well written article on Yellowstone that explains the past eruptions and the current state of the hotspot. I really like the end quote, I also like how it explains how big the eruptions are compared to Mount St. Helens.

What is a supervolcano
The term supervolcano was first used in a BBC program called Horizon in 2000. It became extremely popular by 2003 and is used by the general public and Hollywood. Technically scientist only use the term when addressing the public. Most of the time they will describe a volcano by VEI or volcanic explosivity index. A super volcano is generally considered to have a VEI of at least 8, this means it will erupt at least 1,000 cubic kilometers of rock and ash.
There are seven known super volcano's, the most popular is ofcourse Yellowstone. The most recent to erupt, however, was Lake Taupo in New Zealand. This erupted 1,170 cubic kilometers of rock and ash and was about 26,500 years ago.
Yellowstone's las eruption was about 600,000 to 700,000 years ago and erupted about 1,000 cubic kilometers of rock and ash.

My intentions.
through my travels as a geology undergrad at the university of Wyoming I have learned that the public, and more specifically the students, have fears about Yellowstone. I want to go through and clarify some facts and misconceptions about this supervolcano. I may get very in depth to show how hot rock flows under Yellowstone. I will also go into some of the research going on and why its important to not get to worked up about the Yellowstone super volcano.
